Happy Easter Fellow Foodies!

Can you believe it, Easter weekend is upon us…in typical Easter style so is the rain and cold! Even our micro-buddies have put on their winter woollies and hopefully the cold will keep them at bay a little.  But the cold or the looming holidays do not mean you may veer off your golden path to food safety …cold will only slow their invasion and don’t be fooled to think they have taken holidays…while you are away the bugs will play!

For those who were clever and put in 3 days leave and got 11 days off….  drive, fly and eat safely over this eggcellent time and have an eggstatic Easter!

NEW SANS 10049

Joy and a few tears still prevail after the release of SANS 10049: 2011. With everyone running like headless chickens to get their food safety systems in line with the new regulations, the request for further workshops both here in JHB and other provinces has been overwhelming.  Linda will be strutting her SANS 10049 stuff on the 4 May in CPT, 28 June in JHB and 27 July in PE.

LABELLING AND CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT

Our second "What’s in a label?" Workshop was hosted on the 31 March 2011 in Johannesburg. With CFL’s (Consultants in Food Labelling) Jane and Moira at the helm, the more than 30 delegates left the workshop blown away by how much they still need to do to be in line with the pending regulations.  If you missed out, never fear, our third workshop will be held in Cape Town on the 3 May 2011.  If you have not booked your seat as yet, you had better hurry as very few seats are still available....alternatively have a look at the NEW REGULATIONS posted on our home page.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) 5 Year Report of Foodborne Illness Outbreaks, improper holding temperature was the most commonly reported food preparation practice that contributed to illness. Keeping hot food hot and cold food cold becomes even more important during the summer months.

According to the CDC report, Salmonella caused 69 percent of all bacterial outbreaks. Salmonella also caused more deaths than any other pathogen. These bacteria are most often associated with eggs, poultry products and all raw foods of animal origin.
